with Mike Garcia,
Lanphier (IL) High School Head Track & Field Coach;
2009 Illinois Track & Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee

More than just a technique video, this DVD explores an entire high jump program.

Mike Garcia begins with a classroom overview of coaching the high jump and how to look for athletes who possess the attributes needed to successfully high jump.

Seasonal Planning and Organization
Garcia focuses his planning around a traditional high school season--8-10 weeks on the track with training beginning in late February. Garcia breaks down the season into a 3-phase training plan:

  • The Habit Phase - This early season phase focuses on conditioning and establishing consistent approaches by forming good habits. Consistent approaches lead to consistent heights!
  • Mid-Season Phase - A 3-4 week phase characterized by "developmental meets" and hard training.
  • Championship Phase - This focuses on fine tuning for regional and state championship competition.
A day-by-day sample plan for a typical week in each phase is provided. Garcia also shares his in-season and off-season strength training protocol for his high jumpers.

Creating Workouts
Garcia discusses how he constructs his practices. He details strategies for general warm-up, high jump specific technique and training, as well as the importance of the end of practice time where excellent coach-athlete communication opportunities exist. Included in this segment are strategies to most effectively accommodate both novice jumpers and elite jumpers at the same time.

On the Track Segment
Garcia provides a step-by-step overview of how he teaches the event, identifies common mistakes that rob your athletes of success, and discusses strategies for jumping order and passing.

In the drill segment, Garcia delivers curve drills, basketball drills, wall drill, circle drill, pit drill, 3 and 4 step drills and approach drills. He then breaks down several full jumps narrating each jump and sharing invaluable coaching points on each jump. He follows with a hurdle drill that he utilizes at practice and at meets that are especially good to execute between jumps.

Garcia concludes his presentation by sharing his "best practice" strategies for successful meet days.

with Cliff Rovelto, Kansas State University Director of Cross Country and Track & Field;
USA Track & Field Master Coach - Jumps; 7x Team USA staff member; 2001 U.S. Track Coaches Association Women's Outdoor National Coach of the Year, 5x Midwest Region Coach of the Year; 2001 USTCA Women's Outdoor National Coach of the Year; 2x Big 12 Conference Women's Outdoor Coach of the Year

USA Track & Field Master Coach Cliff Rovelto takes you through over 40 drills used to develop stronger and faster horizontal jumpers. Athletes and coaches will benefit from this outline for creating more power and force into the ground, which creates a more consistent approach and a longer jump.

This DVD is packed full of coaching advice and drills that are both easy to understand and clear in their instruction.

Coach Rovelto breaks down his teaching method into two areas:

  • Drills for the Approach - The goal of any horizontal jumper is to develop the maximum controllable speed on the runway that can still allow for a controllable takeoff. These drills vary from working on the rhythm of your approach to building up to your max controllable speed.
  • Drills for the Landing - Rovelto shows you how most athletes land and how to correct that to land in a more efficient manner. You'll learn how to land "active," which promotes the greatest possible extension when landing. This extension can increase your jump six to eight inches or more, the difference between making the finals and going home early.

Some of the drills presented include wall run, rollover start, step-step-jump, hurdle mobility, straight leg hops and continuous pop-offs. You will begin to see the importance of perfecting these skills before progressing into actual jumping. Coach Rovelto covers such topics as: Acceleration, the drive phase, and maximum velocity mechanics.

Also included is a series of triple jump drills that teach proper triple jump technique, which includes a hop series, step series, and combination series. These drills can also be used to develop overall strength in your jumpers.

Rovelto also shares ideas on how to set-up workouts and competition strategies.

As with all of Coach Rovelto's instructional DVD's, this video is one of the best to help the horizontal jumper and/or coach set up a progressive training approach in a very easy to follow format. Whether you are a beginning or advanced coach or athlete, there is plenty to learn from this well produced and easy to understand video, which makes this a much needed addition to any track & field training library.

Though practice footage with athletes at Texas A&M, Head Coach Pat Henry takes a coach step by step through many of the drills that produced his successful sprinters and relay teams.

With sprinting, Henry goes through three distinct areas of successful sprinting: the proper block start, the keys to acceleration, and maintaining top end speed throughout the race. Henry takes the viewer through each step in the process he uses to teach the correct way for an athlete to best use the blocks. Henry uses various drills to teach proper foot placement, the correct shin angles at the set position, and foot contacts out of the blocks.

In teaching acceleration, Henry shows the viewer the various drills and cues used to achieve the best drive phase for a sprinter. With top end speed work, Henry goes through his wicket drill that he uses with all his male and female athletes at Texas A&M. The wicket drill provides a process for a sprinter to learn the proper stride rate and frequency through the top end speed phase of the race.

In the relays, Henry explains the process he uses to set up a successful 4x100m relay. Henry provides the viewer the proper place to start for each exchange, how to best accelerate through the exchange zone, and how to handle the baton between each runner.

2x Olympian and 6x USA Champion;
and Mike Hazle, 2008 Olympian

Legendary Javelin thrower Tom Pukstys shares the techniques, drills and strategies that made him the USA's top Javelin thrower for over a decade.

Following a javelin specific 25+ exercise warm-up, Coach Pukstys breaks his intensive technique instruction into three areas: the power position that details body positioning from the ground up, body angles that are essential to throwing success, and the position and location of the javelin to maximize power for the throw.

Pukstys emphasizes that the throw is not arm activated, but rather leg and hip activated. He underscores the need for the athlete to feel the separation of the lower and upper body on the throw. Pukstys teaches the release technique of the throw that requires pro-nation with the thumb turning inside.

Next in the skill progression is the standing throw. In this segment, Pukstys and Hazle focus on a sequence of ground contact, hip, chest and the arm with pro-nation on the follow through.

Pukstys progresses into movement for the throw. Beginning with a one-step throw and progressing to a three-step throw that adds momentum and pressure along with incorporating the penultimate or impulse step. Pukstys and Hazle discuss the technical aspects of the wrap, a more advanced technique that takes the thrower from a more linear position to a more rotated position.

You will also see how to set up a successful throwing practice as Pukstys details three throwing workout days: target practice, medium throwing and hard throwing. Pukstys and Hazle move to the weight room where Hazle demonstrates seven javelin specific training exercises that focus on developing explosive elastic power and overall athleticism.

In addition, Pukstys and Hazle share a breakdown of meet footage that pulls together all aspects of the javelin throw presented into an actual event.

Throughout the presentation, Pukstys interacts with Hazle by coaching him and seeking feedback from him. This interaction adds a unique perspective for the viewer, garnering both a coach and athlete perspective on the event. Hazle's quest for perfection exudes throughout the presentation and offers a positive example for young athletes in seeing an Olympic level thrower constantly striving to improve.

25 Tips & Drills for Coaching Horizontal Jumps

with Mike Pullins,
USC Assistant Track Coach

featuring demonstrations by Jesse Williams, 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials High Jump Champ (7'7"); and Allen Simms, 6th place at the '08 Olympic Trials in the Triple Jump

Mike Pullins shares his successful teaching tactics and tips in this DVD on coaching the horizontal jumps. Approach runs are a must for all jumpers and will allow the athlete to have jumping success. Coach Pullins believes 16 to 20 steps is the aim early in the season for approach runs. He teaches to drive out on the first four steps to build speed on the approach. To develop a good approach, Pullins demonstrates a "push, pull, plant" technique that incorporates hurdles on the jump runway. First and second phase run off, standing landing drill, box step, small hop & big step, standing 4-step and the first & second phase long jump are all good drills for pre-season workouts. Each drill is slightly different and has a special skill focus. Advanced drills for experienced jumpers include single leg projection hops, step drill, straight line paw repeat, paw read push drill, alternating step, single leg hop and the strong/weak drills. Rhythm is crucial to the jump events and improvement comes from the rhythm run off drill. The walking extension drill uses hurdles and enhances flexibility, posture and a straight line push. As a bonus, Pullins demonstrates 22 additional drills using med balls, resistance bands, jump pads, boxes and hurdles to create the desired effect. The emphasis is on addressing conditioning, flexibility and proper posturing.
